A new toy

Finally I got myself a new tech-toy. This time a pretty useful one too - a Sony Ericsson K700i accompanied with a Jabra BT250.

The reasons behind this heinous coat-switching action (all the Finns buy Nokia phones, right?) are as follows:

  1. Bluetooth
  2. SyncML support, and a promise of compatibility from the Apple
  3. Good price/feature ratio

I was perfectly happy with my previous mobile phone, except for the lack of device connectivity that forced me to type down all my calendar markings separately. And no, I did not want to pay for the Nokia proprietary cable. I also disliked the bundled stereo headset that was absolutely horrible to wear (in Finland it's illegal to drive a car while using a mobile phone without a "hands-free" headset). And no, I did not want to pay for another wireless headset.

This evening has passed wondering all the features, and especially pairing the phone to every computer in my house. Now that I have my iCal, which is able to read events from the OpenPSA, synced with the phone, I'm starting to wonder how I ever managed without it. I still have to get the modem script from the software CD and try that one too.

I've never fancied the phone cameras, but regular visits to the Bergie's moblog are starting to change my mind. Now, all I need is to get the MMS-to-Midgard script from Bergie and ask nicely if Rambo would add me to the Nemein's SMS-GW.

Update 2005-01-12

Alright! Finally I got the K700i working as a modem for my iBook via BlueTooth. The fact that I left for a meeting two hours early ended me to a local public library without a public wireless network. This setback gave me a good opportunity, and some serious motivation, to make the "alternative hot-spot" work.

I've tried the setup on few occasions but always ended up with the "Cannot open communication device" message. I thought that this was due to wrong modem script but apparently it was about the initial BlueTooth device settings in the OS X. To resolve the problem I had to re-install the BlueTooth device and enable the "Use the device as a modem" checkbox. The "Sony Ericsson GPRS CID4" script is working for my K700i.
